What is a fire ceremony?

A fire ceremony is a ritual that incorporates the element of fire.  I have seen in used in different ways: offering to higher beings (e.g. havan in Indian traditions) and manifest wishes (e.g. I recently partook in this in Bhutan paired with dancing and other indigenous traditions).  I’ve also heard about fire ceremonies being used in other cultures and traditions, especially around holidays or rituals with sacred meaning.

Fire in Indian Traditions

Many ancient traditions use the elements and connection to nature as part of their rituals.  In Ayurveda there are five elements (earth, water, fire, air, ether), fire is the element of transformation.  Growing up my parents would light incense every morning as part of their daily prayers and would light diyas (oil lamps) on special occasions such as Diwali.  Hindu and Jain weddings include the bride and groom circumambulating around a fire.

Fire Ceremony to Release Negativity

I was first introduced to a fire ceremony as a way of letting go of negative thoughts and emotions when I met my husband.  He used to conduct fire ceremonies frequently with the Reiki and meditation group he was a part of.  We would do a fire ceremony at anytime we felt heavy or weighted down with negativity.  Last year we added a fire ceremony to our end-of-year ritual of filling out Cosmic Starlight and we immediately felt that it was a powerful inclusion.  Based on this experience I have included a fire ceremony in Cosmic Starlight, including detailed step-by-step instructions on how you can conduct a fire ceremony safely.  I’ve also provided alternatives for those who would like to do a releasing ceremony without fire.

Fire Ceremony Overview

Fire Ceremonies can benefit the participants by helping you feel lighter and more clear.  When doing a ceremony in a group the collective energy amplifies the ritual.  It's also a great way to connect with others and feel less alone and understand how universal the human condition is.

Fire Ceremony Steps

  • Opening Invocation
  • Write a list of what you want to release
  • Burn or tear-up the list
  • Closing Invocation
