Take Control Before the Burnout Takes You
Share
We live in a world that glamorizes productivity and normalizes high-functioning anxiety. We’re expected to do more, even as we feel increasingly disconnected from ourselves and our communities. Lately, it feels like we’re living in a powder keg; the constant uncertainty keeps our "fight, flight, or freeze" response on a loop.
I’ve been on the brink of burnout several times. What I’ve learned is this: Don’t wait for the collapse to be your wake-up call. Take control of your energy while you still have it.
Give Yourself Permission to Rest
Many of us feel a lingering guilt when we aren't "doing." But your energy is a finite resource. Just as a battery needs a source of power to recharge, so do you.
Rest goes beyond a solid night's sleep. it includes mindful pauses, doing things you love just for the joy of it, and prioritizing deep connection with loved ones. It’s seductive to chase the "high" of being productive to feel worthy, but you are worthy exactly as you are—as a soul on this planet. You don’t need to produce to deserve peace.
Find Your Personal Rituals
Once you give yourself permission, the next step is discovery. We are all wired differently. I’ve explored everything from NLP to Pranic Healing, and the rituals I keep today are simply the ones that worked for me.
Follow your curiosity. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, reiki, or an acupressure mat, pay attention to the "aha" moments and the synchronicities. Your body will tell you when you’ve found your medicine.
Schedule Your Play
If it isn’t on the calendar, it usually doesn't happen. We schedule our meetings and errands with discipline—why not our joy? Put non-negotiable blocks on your calendar for a massage, a walk, or a coffee date with a friend. If you don't defend your time, the world will happily consume it.
The S.O.S. Protocol
Some days, despite your best intentions, the energy just isn't there. Maybe it’s the collective energy or a personal shift. In those moments, allow for an "S.O.S. day." Do the bare minimum. Delegate. Deprioritize. It will feel uncomfortable, but I promise: the world will not end if you take a step back. In fact, it might be the only way to keep going.
The Constant Check-In
We are human beings, not machines. Our needs change with the seasons. Approach your health with curiosity rather than treating it like another checklist to conquer. Regularly ask yourself: “What does my soul need in this specific moment?”
Stop normalizing the stress. Your future self is waiting for you to exhale.
